Is it giving a hateful response to someones display of pain?

Is it giving money, or toys, coats. Helping serve a meal to the

homeless a couple days a week?

When you see a drunk with his hair standing up on his head, and

he blows his booze breath in your face?

Do you make an ugly face, and turn away from the ugliness?

Or do you treat him like a human being who is pain?

When you can treat a derelict on the street as you would the

ambassador of another country. You will know what charity is.

Because that derelict is an ambassador of your Creator on

High!

So, if you don't know what it is, you suppose you're charitable. Ok...

Are you or aren't you? Don't answer outloud, just answer yourself. And if you are known to do these things you've listed, why let it bother you that someone says otherwise?

In the Bible the word "charity" is simply translated "love."

It's as simple as that. Also, charity should not be given with a thought of personal gain...or it can't truly be called charity.

I guess you answered your own question. But drunks make a choice to be drunk. I'd save my charity for those who need help the most. How about the people in Darfur? How about children in hospitals or battered women and children. Cancer patients or people in need of medicines.

Everyone defines charity differently. For most people, I believe it means being able to give freely of themselves and their worldly posessions to those around them (friends and family or others in need). This small act of giving allows the receiver to feel better about their surroundings in turn allows the giver to feel closer to their "higher power".

Why? Because it is what you would want someone to do for you if you were in the same position. It is hard to humble yourself to the point of having to ask for another being's assistance. Try it, don't just ask for something trivial, denigrate yourself to the point of hopelessness, then try it. It isn't so easy. Being independant is a part of who we are, so if another can allow us to keep that dignity (or at least some part of it), so much the better for both parties involved. Charity is what allows us to fulfill that option of both hope and independence. Given freely, without strings, it gets people back on their feet, maybe to return the favor to someone else (and that's karma, and yet another definition).
