We live in Portland oregon, and it's summer here. He is not scratching or bitting so i don't think it's allergies. The hair is just comming out all the time. I don't know what its caused by. We feed him purina healthy radiance, could that be the problem?? He does not eat human food, drinks ALOT of water and is in perfect health. (we just took him to the vet a month ago and the vet said he was perfect) The hair problem just started about 2 weeks ago. If ya have an answer for me i would be sooo happy. Thanks

sometimes that can be a thyroid problem. But German Shepherds coats shed year round and ALWAYS have hair coming out. Also, some dogs "blow their coat" twice a year (usually in early spring %26amp; later again in the year) shedding out the old dense undercoat to allow for new growth.

Groom him daily %26amp; maybe get his thyroid checked but unless he starts getting skin problems or patches of missing fur I think he should be ok.

Also, it could sometimes be a food allergy, but usually that causes dandruff like symptoms.

If he is just shedding all over and not developing bald or bare patches, it's probably just normal summer shedding. Start brushing.

That said, Purina food is not the greatest and it caused allergies in my dogs long ago so I haven't used in it a very long time. In general, avoid grocery store food and feed something like California Natural, Innova, Royal Canin or another quality brand for the best coat condition.

You should also brush him every day. that should help.

He is sheding off the remainder of his winter coat and it's normal

sounds like he is adjusting to the weather dogs do that if they are kept outside or spend alot outdoors, usually bi annually help it along by daily brushing yeah its a pain but the hairballs are too you can treat him to a extra bath or two as well usually takes 3-4 wks for a whole cycle so your half way through it if persists longer than a month talk to vet could be vitamin defiecieny

It could be the food. I feed Canidae here but Eagle Pack is also very good. Neither is a corn based food and neither contains wheat or soy. All of those can cause allergic reactions. There are other brands that also very good.

There is an excellent magazine called Whole Dog Journal that has great information on both dry and canned dog foods - and none of them are on the recall list that I know of. Here is a link to it if you are interested. http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/

You don't mention specific bald spots so it could also be the hot weather. I am assuming you have groomed him several time. My GSD used to carpet the house when the hot weather came. It seemed as though I would never get rid of the loose hair. Are you having a really hot summer in Oregon? It's been awful so far in Florida. :-)

German Sheperds shed a lot( you have a pile of hair) in spring, brush them
